# SI-3: Funding & Growth Signals

> A company that just raised $15M has new budget, new initiatives, and a compressed timeline to show results. Funding signals are among the most time-sensitive in B2B outbound.

<Info>

</Info>

Every funding round announcement is a green light. The company just validated their model enough to attract investment. They're entering a growth phase. They have budget. They have urgency. They're hiring.

For B2B sellers, a funding event at an ICP-fit company is one of the clearest buying signals available.

## Funding Stages and Relevance

| Stage | Typical Size | What It Signals | Outbound Relevance |
| ------------- | ------------ | ------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Pre-seed**  | \< \$1M      | Idea stage, tiny team                 | Usually too early unless you have a startup-focused product |
| **Seed** | $1M–$5M | Building MVP, hiring founding team | Monitor; outreach if they're hiring sales |
| **Series A**  | $5M–$20M     | Proven product, building go-to-market | **High** — first serious GTM investment                     |
| **Series B** | $15M–$50M | Scaling what works, professionalizing | **Very high** — investing in infrastructure and efficiency |
| **Series C+** | \$50M+       | Expanding market, enterprise motion   | High — large budget, complex procurement                    |
| **Growth/PE** | \$100M+      | Late-stage optimization               | Medium — longer cycles, more stakeholders                   |

Series A and B are the sweet spot for most B2B outbound tools. Companies have proven traction but are still building the infrastructure to scale.

## Signal Anatomy: What to Extract from a Funding Announcement

Every funding announcement contains more than just the dollar amount. Here's what to extract:

**Company signals:**

* Total raised (context for budget scale)
* Lead investor (tier of investor signals company quality)
* Board changes (new investors often bring in operators as advisors)

**Growth signals:**

* Stated use of funds: "expand sales team" vs. "product development" vs. "international expansion"
* Headcount plans mentioned in the press release
* New markets or products mentioned

**Timing signals:**

* How long since the last round (burn rate indicator)
* How many rounds total (stage of company journey)

```
Analyze this funding announcement for outbound signals:
Company: {{company_name}}
Announcement: {{press_release_or_news_snippet}}
Extract:
1. Round size
2. Funding stage (seed/series-a/series-b/series-c/growth)
3. Stated use of funds (especially: team expansion, sales/marketing investment)
4. Key investor names
5. Any GTM or product expansion signals
6. Outbound relevance: high/medium/low (based on whether stated use of funds involves sales/growth)
7. Optimal outreach window: how many days from announcement?
Return as JSON.
## Detecting Funding Events
Sources for funding signal detection:
| Source                       | Update Frequency | Coverage                                           |
| ---------------------------- | ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| **Crunchbase**               | Near real-time   | Excellent for US, good globally                    |
| **PitchBook**                | Real-time        | Best for institutional rounds, expensive           |
| **TechCrunch**               | Daily            | High-profile rounds, editorial coverage            |
| **LinkedIn company updates** | Variable         | Self-reported, often earlier than official sources |
| **SEC EDGAR**                | Filing-based     | US companies only, some delay                      |
| **Google Alerts**            | Variable         | Good for news coverage of rounds                   |
For automated detection, Crunchbase API is the standard. Set up webhook triggers for new funding events matching your ICP criteria (industry + stage + geography).
## Growth Signals Beyond Funding
Funding is the most obvious growth signal but not the only one. These are equally actionable:
| Signal                                    | Source                     | Outreach Angle                                                                                                        |
| ----------------------------------------- | -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Rapid headcount growth** (>30% in 12mo) | LinkedIn company page      | "You're scaling fast — how are you building the GTM infrastructure to support it?"                                    |
| **New market entry**                      | Press release, LinkedIn    | "Saw you're expanding to \[market] — outbound infrastructure is usually the first bottleneck in a new geo"            |
| **Strategic partnership announcement**    | PR, LinkedIn               | "The \[Partner] announcement must be driving a lot of new inbound — how are you turning that into outbound pipeline?" |
| **New product launch**                    | Product Hunt, company blog | "New product = new ICP = new outbound motion. Here's how teams handle this."                                          |
| **IPO filing**                            | SEC EDGAR                  | High-urgency, enterprise motion — needs senior outreach                                                               |
## Funding-Triggered Email Template
```
Write a funding-triggered cold email:

Prospect: {{first_name}} {{last_name}}, {{job_title}} at {{company_name}}
Funding event: {{funding_stage}} round of {{round_size}}
Stated use of funds: {{use_of_funds}}
Days since announcement: {{days_since}}

Requirements:
- Reference the specific funding event (not generic congratulations)
- Connect their growth phase to a specific problem we solve (outbound infrastructure doesn't scale automatically with headcount)
- Keep it under 80 words
- CTA: Specific ask — "show you what this looks like for a team at your stage"
- Tone: Collegial, not salesy

Return ONLY the email body.
```
<Tip>
  **Quick Check:** Which funding stages are typically the highest-relevance for outbound tools? What signals beyond dollar amount should you extract from a funding announcement? Name three growth signals that don't involve funding.
